The Elephant in the Room Series Two: DSM-V Revision Activities: New reports from Work Groups

The American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) is anticipated to be finalised in May 2012, (now 2013) with a draft expected in 2009 (now 2010). DSM-V is to be “harmonized” for congruency with the chapter on Mental and Behavioural Disorders in ICD-11 (currently Chapter V in ICD-10).

The March 2009 report of the DSM-V Task Force can be read on the website of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) here

The April 2009 reports of the 13 DSM-V Work Groups can be read here

These include the latest report on the DSM-V “Somatic Distress Disorders” Work Group, published today, which can be read here

Note: Four members of the CISSD Project’s 24 member international Work Group (Arthur J. Barsky, Francis Creed, James L. Levenson, Michael Sharpe) have been members of the APA’s DSM-V Work Group on Somatic Symptom Disorders since 2007. The CISSD Project was co-ordinated by Dr Richard Sykes, PhD, and administered by UK patient organisation, Action for M.E.

Francis Creed is the co-editor of the Journal of Psychosomatic Research – the official journal of the European Association for Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatics (EACLPP), of which Professor Creed is a Board Member.

Joel Dimsdale (Chair) and Francis Creed have jointly published the following Editorial report in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research on behalf of the DSM-V Work Group on Somatic Symptom Disorders (aka Somatic Distress Disorders Work Group):
